Proposed additions to the western power grid, like the Centennial West Clean Line, must be studied through the regional planning processes. These planning processes ensure that new lines maximize their ability to make the entire transmission system more reliable and efficient.
Several groups facilitate regional planning in the West. Clean Line Energy, the company developing the Centennial West Clean Line project, is a member of the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC). Clean Line staff serve on the WECC Scenario Planning Steering Group and Environmental Data Task Force, and also participate in the Southwest Area Transmission sub-group of WestConnect. Project representatives are also involved in transmission planning through the California Independent System Operator and the California Transmission Planning Group.
